Picture THE SCENE as sapian

toil and settlement falls

to waste; unloved, exhausted,


soiled. Now Nature,

as DIRECTOR,

as god,

alone,

creates…


ENTER (in spiked chariot): Urtica dioica,

a.k.a. The Nettle,

humblest of warriors


From earth’s iron, straightened,

in stinging ranks of he and she,

their and her shoulder

to shoulder alike, they rise


All rheumatic custom blistering,

so all sclerotic, stung—

with sharper energy,


quivers, galvanized
